Batman: Gauntlet, the a DC Comic Prestige Book
Published in Paperback by DC Comics (November, 2000)
Average review score:

Graduation DayAfter going through Batman's rigorous training, Dick Grayson, the first Robin, is ready to partner Batman in the fight to eradicate crime in Gotham City. But in order to do so, he has to pass his final test: to elude Batman from sunset till sunrise. Things take a turn for the worse when Robin unknowingly stumbles onto something which may cost him his life. Now Batman must race against time to find Robin before it is too late. This is one of the best stories I have ever read. If my memory is right, this is the first Bat book I bought (by the way, I am not a Batman fan). Definitely worth buying.

Extraordinary! Great!I got the Book three years ago and went and put it on my book shelf. I recently ordered the graphic novel by Frank Miller: The Dark Knight Returns, and after reading that went and searched my book shelf for Kightfall And Beyond. Knightfall is a gripping novel of the fall of Batman by Bane, the newest criminal to hit Gotham's streets. With Batman broken, Bruce Wayne chooses Jean Paul Valley, A.K.A. Azrael, to become the the new dark knight. But the new Batman's ways of dealing with crime are too Harsh and are giving Batman's name a Bad rap. After defeating Bane, Batman kills two people and Bruce Decideds the he has made the wrong decision. After being healed by Dr. Shondra Kinsolving with her psyoinic healing power, Bruce makes his way back up to reclaiming the mantel of the Bat. When Bruce first became Batman he vowed to fight crime without taking another man's life. So now to take back his name, Bruce must defeat the man who defeated Bane. Once I started to read this book I couldn't put it down! I suggest this book to any age group and you should read it even if you aren't a batman fan! You should also read the Graphic novels Kightfall:Broken Bat and Kightfall:Who Rules the Night.

The battle of the narrow seas : a history of the light Coastal forces in the channel and North Sea, 1939-1945

Gripping involving history of British MGBs and MTBs in WWIIThis book was written by Sir Peter Scott who later became famous as a naturalist (Now, sadly, deceased I believe). The book tells the story of the actions fought by British MTBs and MGBs in the English Channel and North Sea during World War 2 with extensive accounts of actions. The book involves you both in the battles and the people and conveys the tenacity and bravery of this extraordinary group of men. It made such an impression on me when I read it at around the age of fourteen that I'm looking for it again twenty two years later.

Beat the Devil
Published in Paperback by Bantam Books (March, 1984)
Average review score:

Great chills!I read this book in the early-mid 80s, when I was still young, and this book is just such a classic! It was easily one of my favorites of this series ("Dark Forces"). It's about a guy who gets involved in a computer game, bought in a rather mysterious shop, that slowly starts to consume him. He and his friend have to find a way to "Beat The Devil"! Great adolescent horror series for anyone who can locate it! Good luck! :)

Beethoven and His World
Published in Paperback by Princeton Univ Pr (15 September, 2000)
Average review score:

Engaging essays about a complex manGiven the range and breadth of Western music, it is astonishing how often we fall back on the work of this German dude from the late 18th, early 19th century. Many people who find Western art music a snore have Beethoven records in their collection, and the complex mythology that has grown up around the composer and his works barely accounts for how often his works are played. This book, which grew out of a festival of Beethoven's works, provides some really fascinating material. My three favorite essays explored Beethoven and the concept of masculinity (he's typically considered a "masculine" composer for complex reasons), the reason for Beethoven's "scowl" (I won't give it away, but it's amazing), and a long thoughtful reflection on how Beethoven's image was shaped by his death in Vienna, and the public response to that event. If you want a standard bio of LvB, there are plenty of good ones out there. These essays give some non-standard perspectives on the most revered composer in Western culture, and may help you understand why people feel that way about him.

Beethoven Lives Upstairs
Published in Hardcover by Orchard Books (March, 1994)
Average review score:

Life With Beethoven....."...I write, Uncle, because something terrible has happened. A madman has moved into our house." Young Christoph can't believe his family's misfortune with their new boarder. Mr Beethoven has rented the upstairs rooms, and the terrible noises begin at dawn. There's loud pounding and howling, stomping and crashing. Beethoven has four pianos, some without legs sitting right on the floor so that he can "hear" the vibrations of his music. His room is a mess, papers scattered everywhere, dirty dishes and clothes on every surface, and he writes on the walls. He walks the streets humming and growling, and waving his arms. Christoph is mortified, angry, and embarrassed as he asks his uncle..."I beg you to tell my mother to send Mr Beethoven away." But as the months and then years go by, Christoph's letters begin to change. He develops compassion and tolerance for this eccentric musical genius who lives upstairs, that slowly turns into respect, admiration, and true friendship..... Barbara Nichol and Scott Cameron have authored a creative and inventive story, written as correspondence between uncle and nephew, that combines history, music, and actual events during the three years Beethoven wrote his Ninth Symphony in Vienna. Christoph's intriguing and compelling letters are full of drama and tension as he tells his uncle what it's like to live with the deaf and tormented composer. His uncle, also a musician, writes back giving Christoph insight and understanding into Beethoven's life and times and famous temper. Ms Nichol's engaging and entertaining text is spellbinding and enhanced by Mr Cameron's dark, lush oil paintings. Together word and art transport you back to the 1820s, and allows the reader to spy on Beethoven as he works. Perfect for youngsters 8-12, Beethoven Lives Upstairs is an evocative and fascinating adventure about a remarkable composer that is sure to whet the appetite of budding musicians, and send them looking for more.

Beginning Chinese (Mandarin)--(Critical Languages Series)

Average review score:

Excellent Multimedia resourceThis is an excellent learning resource. Each lesson is based on an authentic dialogue performed in a video clip. The dialogue is set in a real life context and is appropriate for a begining Chinese student.
Additionally, the text is written out and each word and each phrase is provided for the user for individual playback. There is also a quiz on content to test comprehension and a section to record one's own performance.
It is the equivalent of a textbook, audio tapes, and additional multimedia and well worth the price.

Grand Collection of Top ThinkersScott MacDonald, a notable figure in the study of medieval philosophy in his own right, has gathered a top-rated group of scholars in this collection of essays on a seminal, yet difficult, pair of related concepts in medieval philosophy. I have had recourse to various essays in this book on more than one occassion in my studies and any student of medieval philosophy/theology, will find it a valuable resource.

Fabulous Nature EssaysWe used this fine collection of essays in a college course called "Wilderness Writing" where we camped, hiked, snowshoed, skiied, mtn. biked, etc and then wrote essays about our experiences. This book was the cornerstone of our class. It is chok full of the best essays on the world around us. When I have time to read I find myself coming back to this collection again and again. It is the finest collection of nature essays I've read. I still find myself going to it to help me teach my first-year college writing course. This is a keeper!
